Roscoe Smith will redshirt this season after a request for a legislative relief waiver was denied by the NCAA.
Smith left Connecticut after they were banned from postseason play in 2013.
“We are disappointed for Roscoe and our team, but we understand and accept the decision,” UNLV coach Dave Rice said in a statement. “Roscoe brings tremendous experience from being a big part of a national championship team at UConn, and he is now a highly valued member of our program.”
Terrence Samuel has a top six of Tennessee, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Pittsburgh, Dayton and Temple.
“It’s wherever I feel comfortable,” said Samuel, who led South Shore High School to the Smartball Classic title on Thursday with seven points, eight rebounds and seven assists in a 62-51 victory over Bayside at Abraham Lincoln Playground in Harlem. “Good graduation rate, where I’m going to play. Distance [from home] doesn’t matter. It’s whoever I like. Every school is a good opportunity. At the end of the day, it’s what fits me.”
Samuel will visit all six schools prior to making a decision on Nov. 1.
“It’s tough, but I have to go somewhere,” Samuel said. “I’m trying to go to college, play ball, achieve my goals.”
Kentucky, North Carolina, Duke, Michigan State, Florida, Connecticut, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Georgetown, Stanford, Oregon, Butler, Xavier, Portland and Gonzaga have committed to special tournament in November of 2017 to celebrate Phil Knight's 80th birthday.
Knight, the co-founder of Nike, will turn 80 on February 24, 2018.
The two tournaments, each consisting of eight teams, will take place over four days in Portland, Oregon.
"All of these great basketball programs have been supported by Phil Knight and Nike," Michigan State AD Mark Hollis said. "His support of the programs have created scholarships and resources for these departments to excel."
Hollis said he has contacted ESPN about televising the event. ESPN vice president Burke Magnus confirmed the discussion and said that ESPN is interesting in televising it in 2017.
The best high school junior, Andrew Wiggins, would be in his senior year of college during the event should he stay in school.
Xavier Rathan-Mayes is focused on six schools at this point in his recruitment.
“It’s tough,” Rathan-Mayes’ stepfather, Tharon Mayes said. “He’s getting calls from everywhere. I think he’s finally got it down to five or six schools he’s interested in.”
Those schools are Florida State, UConn, Memphis, Baylor, Alabama and UCLA.
Rathan-Mayes has already taken an unofficial visit to UConn, but Tharon is wary of whether Jim Calhoun will return for the 2013-14 season.
“It’s a concern,” Tharon said. “He likes Kevin Ollie. Kevin’s been speaking to him, it’s definitely a school of interest. But that is something that’s a little scary.”
Kuran Iverson is considering Connecticut, Syracuse, Florida and Memphis.
Iverson visited Uconn this week and will also meet with his other three finalists before making a decision.
“We’re going to take visits to Syracuse, Memphis and Florida before he makes his own choice,” Iverson’s mentor Andre Harrington said.
Kuran Iverson recently took a recruiting trip to the University of Connecticut.
Iverson, a consensus top 50 recruit, is a cousin of former NBA star Allen Iverson.
A 6-foot-8 forward, Iverson has offers from Connecticut and Oklahoma State.
Connecticut received a verbal commitment from Kentan Facey, a highly-touted 6-foot-9 forward out of New York Long Island Lutheran.
Facey, a native of Jamaica, chose the Huskies over USC, UCLA, Louisville, Pittsburgh, Memphis, St. John’s, Providence and Rutgers.
“That was the only school I knew anything about when I came to the states,” Facey said. “I was always a UConn fan, I always liked UConn.”
Kemba Walker recently returned to UConn after playing at the NBA summer league in Las Vegas.
Walker has participated in workouts with Omar Calhoun, a 6-foot-3, 190 pound guard who is the top rated player in UConn's 2012 recruiting class.
“You can tell that he works very hard and pushes himself,” Walker said in his assessment of Calhoun. “It's all up to him. If he keeps working hard, he can become a lot better."
Walker expects Calhoun to quickly adjust to the physical demands of college basketball.
"Physically, definitely, he's further along," Walker said. "That's huge at the college level.”
Xavier Rathan-Mayes has narrowed his list of college choices to UCLA, Kentucky, Florida, Florida State, UConn, Baylor, Illinois, Kansas, Alabama, and Illinois.
